This remarkable Georgian mourning ring commemorates a married couple, Mrs Susannah Gosnell and Mr Sam Gosnell, who passed away just ten days apart in July 1827. Crafted in rich 18ct Gold, the ring is set with a deep red Garnet beneath a protective layer of Glass – a classic construction for high-status mourning jewellery of the period.

The inscription “OB 24th July 1827 at 71 Mrs Susannah Gosnell” and “OB 14th July 1827 Mr Sam Gosnell” is beautifully preserved, offering a poignant glimpse into 19th-century family history. An exceptional example of double-obituary mourning jewellery, rarely found in such crisp and original condition.

MEASUREMENTS: Ring band tapers from 12mm to 2mm wide. 
Garnets are 3mm in diameter. 
WEIGHT: 4.5g

MATERIALS: Tests as 18ct Gold, Garnet, Glass.

HALLMARKS: Crown, "18", Leopard's Head for London, date letter "M" for 1827, and maker’s mark "CR". Since we have dated this piece as being made before 1950, a hallmark is not required in order for it to be sold in line with UK hallmarking legislation.

PACKAGING: Your order will be gift-wrapped free of charge in a Lillicoco cardboard box made from recycled materials, tied with a ribbon.

Condition

EXCELLENT: The Garnet and protective Glass top are beautifully preserved with no chips, scratches or surface wear. The Gold shank remains strong and well-shaped with minimal age-related wear. The engraved mourning inscriptions are crisp and highly legible, a testament to careful preservation over nearly two centuries.
